“Most of us have seen the website…which is hilarious, by the way”

The letter’s author states that most of the inmates have seen this website, which he describes as hilarious. He goes on to say that the inmates have started mocking Wenke based on the site’s content, including my frequent highlighting of Wenke’s bizarrely close relationship with his mother.

According to the author, Wenke’s fellow inmates didn’t see the attack as it happened. They could supposedly only hear Wenke yelling in apparent disbelief while Van Epps allegedly bashed his head against the sink in Wenke’s cell. The writer also describes the aftermath of the assault, noting that “there was blood and teeth left in the cell.”

Did the alleged assault on Luke Wenke really happen?

It’s a common-sense measure not to automatically believe a person’s claims, including those made by a stranger who also happens to be an inmate. It’s therefore possible that Luke Wenke wasn’t assaulted and that the story is a fabrication.

One theory, posited by a friend of mine who’s familiar with Luke Wenke and jail culture, suggests that Wenke paid a fellow inmate to write to me about a fake assault, knowing it would land on my webpage.

This makes sense, especially since nearly everything Luke Wenke does is for attention. In my opinion, being forgotten is Wenke’s biggest fear. It would be worse than being hated, so receiving attention in any form — including negative attention — is preferable to simply no longer being relevant or having a place in people’s minds.

I believe the inmate’s claims are plausible. Here’s why.

I could be wrong, but it would not surprise me if the alleged assault on Luke Wenke really happened. Here are the major reasons why:

• Luke Wenke does not appear to mention the assault in any of his letters to the court. Its absence suggests that he doesn’t want me (and/or others) to know about it, or that he doesn’t want any mentioning of the assault to circle back to his fellow inmates, and that he deliberately omitted it from his letters because he knows I share them on this site.

• One might theorize that Wenke hasn’t mentioned the assault in his letters to the court because it never happened and perhaps he doesn’t want to get in trouble for lying to the court. Under this thinking, it could be reasonably inferred that Luke Wenke’s myriad of lies that are present in his letters are the products of delusions that he actually believes.

• I disagree. In my opinion, Luke Wenke is far more lucid and coherent than the court and many others are willing to acknowledge, even if he is delusional about certain things.

• I don’t believe for one second that Luke Wenke believes most of his outlandish claims about me. For example, I think he’s extremely aware that I haven’t fucked every cop, corrections officer, judge, and prosecutor that has ever been involved in his cases. But he doesn’t think twice about claiming that I have, demonstrating an apparent ability to blatantly lie.

• During my friendship with Luke Wenke, I noticed that he has a habit of refusing to talk about certain topics, namely things that embarrass him. His silence about an assault would, therefore, fall in line with this established tendency. It would be completely out-of-character for Wenke to stay silent about something while broadcasting news about it via a third party, and it’s highly, highly unlikely that he’d do so at the expense of framing himself in an unflattering light.

• The author wrote the letter just days before he was scheduled to be transferred to a prison elsewhere in the state. He wrote that the assault took place in late April or early May, causing me to wonder if the timing of the letter had something to do with his impending departure from the jail.

• Inmates don’t always lie. Over the last few years, several individuals who have spent time in jail or prison with Luke Wenke have reached out to me after discovering my website. Not all of these men know each other, yet the information they provide is extremely consistent, save for minor discrepancies. A lot of it can be corroborated by things that Wenke wrote in his past letters to the court.

  Moreover, these gentlemen had nothing to gain by telling me that they believed I’d be in danger if and when Wenke was released. None of them have tried to get money, sex, or anything else from me. So, while it’s always wise to heed caution, it’s not completely unheard-of for an inmate/defendant/criminally accused person to tell the truth (and to do so with no outward benefit to themselves).

Moreover, the letter’s author does not fit the profile of the inmates Luke Wenke is known to typically associate with.

• Based on my research, the letter’s author appears to have a lengthy history of arrests and charges, mainly for property crimes. I could not find any evidence of him being in trouble for violent crimes (including sex crimes). Based on Luke Wenke’s own admissions and the details in his past letters to the court, he seems to hang out mostly with alleged chomos and sex offenders, and this group does not appear to include the letter’s author.

• Luke Wenke frequently makes openly racist statements. The letter’s author appears to be nonwhite. While this certainly doesn’t preclude Wenke from pretending to be nice to someone for his own perceived benefit, the inmates clearly know about my website. They’re therefore likely aware of Wenke’s racist behavior, since it is a frequently mentioned topic here.

Perhaps time will tell whether the letter’s claims are true.

I’m trying to verify through trustworthy sources whether the alleged assault really happened. I’m also planning to review Luke Wenke’s letters to the court from the specified time period to see if there are any hints regarding the incident, and I plan to keep current with court updates in case anything relevant is mentioned on the record.
